PlayStation 3 (PS3) is the latest video gaming console released by Sony Computer Entertainment in 2006. The PS3 is the most powerful of the so-called seventh-generation gaming consoles on the market. The system features the first implementation of the Cell microprocessor designed by Sony, Toshiba, and IBM. The PS3 Cell chip has one Power Processing Element and up to eight Synergistic Processing Elements. All the PS3 games run in High Definition and the system has a built-in Blu-ray player. The PS3 unit was originally highly unprofitable with each unit selling at an estimated loss of $250. Sony hopes to sell 100 million consoles over ten years The system is connected for free to the PlayStation Network.
